It's not often that our aquarium botanical suppliers around the world grace us with photos and videos of wild biotope habitats, but when they do we totally geek out over them. These dark tannin stained blackwater habitats of Jambi, Sumatera are breathtaking. The color of the water, mixed with the Barclaya (water spinach), and the sediments which are settled on the leaves is truly inspiring when dreaming up the next botanical aquarium.

Graceful Rasboras have wonderfully slender bodies with hints of iridescents, much like Pencil fish. They glow in the tannin stained waters of Sumatera which get their color from the amount of humic acids in the water which come from broken down plant mater. 'Gambut Habitat' is what is referred to as peat habitats. The abundance of leaves and twigs from the rainforest canopy above, along with soft water, allows the pH's in their habitats to drop as low as 3.0.

These photos really push our boundaries of what can be accomplished in an aquarium. Throw out mainstream aquascaping husbandry standards, embrace detritus.

A hugely underutilized facet of biotope aquariums is aireal vegetation. It's not just about the aquarium botanicals and plants under the water. Surface plants provide cover and refuge to all fish, and the next botanical style aquarium you dream up should include some type of above water vegetation.
