Sword Plants

Native to Central and South America, these rooted plants are well-suited for blackwater, biotope, and botanical method aquariums as a foreground and background plant.

With their large, arching leaves and robust root systems, sword plants stabilize substrates, help to outcompete algae, and create shelter for shy fish and invertebrates. They thrive in enriched substrates and appreciate stable lighting and nutrient availability. Some varieties, like Echinodorus bleheri, produce towering green fans, while others, like Echinodorus rubin, blush red under the right conditions.

Build Your Ecosystem

Aquarium botanicals have varying levels of durability, which is predictive of the leafs waxy coating and the seed pods woody composition. All types are equally important to the botanical aquarium as they build different layers of the ecosystem.
