All Wood, Twigs & Roots
Wood, twigs, and roots are the backbone of Botanical Method, Blackwater, and Biotope aquariums and vivariums. Their branching, tangled structures provide essential surface area for biofilms and fungi, while shaping the flow of water and the layout of your ecosystem. In aquariums, these materials help create shaded zones, break up sight lines, and mimic the submerged forests and stream margins where many fish evolved. In vivariums, they anchor mosses, epiphytes and create microhabitats for invertebrates and amphibians.
Our collection includes curated WYSIWYG Manzanita branches, stumps, and select natural root and twig materials.

All Wood, Twigs & Roots: Foundations for Botanical Method Aquariums & Vivariums
Wood for the botanical method, blackwater, and biotope aquarium is both a habitat and a foundation. Manzanita branches, stumps, and twisted roots create structure, shade, and grazing surfaces. As biofilms and fungi colonize, they provide food for shrimp, snails, and bottom-dwelling fish like Corydoras. In vivariums, thick manzanita wood hold moisture and give springtails and isopods a place to forage. It creates a foundation for epiphytic plants and a habitat for dart frogs or geckos.
Each piece of wood releases beneficial compounds that influence water chemistry, helping you build a stable, tinted environment. Wood ties the ecosystem together—above and below the waterline. All of our wood is sourced as sustainably as possible and selected to support both function and aesthetics in your aquarium or vivarium.
