Home is getting more natural

While the aesthetic appeal of botanicals and tinted water can be quite attractive to us, the recreation of nature to emulate water conditions, feeding patterns, spawning displays, and territory building are the true benefits botanicals provide to our critters.

Botanical FAQs

Compostable Packaging Promise

Our packaging is designed to return safely to the Earth, just like the botanicals inside. Every bag is BPA- and Phthalate-free, GMO-free, and contains no animal products. Each meets ASTM D6400 composting standards, ensuring it can fully break down in a home compost bin.

What are the Fluffy White Growths on my Botanicals?

That’s biofilm and fungi—what we call the “goo phase.” It’s one of the clearest signs that your aquarium is alive and functioning. These growths wax and wane naturally as botanicals decompose. They’re harmless, even beneficial, and will disappear on their own once microbial populations stabilize.

Will botanicals lower the pH of my water?

That depends entirely on your source water. In very soft or RODI water, botanicals can gradually lower pH as tannins and humic substances accumulate. In medium to hard tap water, buffering capacity often resists these shifts, and you may not notice much change. At Betta Botanicals HQ, our very hard water (350+ ppm) shows almost no pH change unless we use botanicals like Alder Cones or Macaranga Leaves.

When should I replace leaves or pods in my tank?

We recommend allowing botanicals to fully break down into detritus, since this fuels microbial life and enriches the substrate. You can remove them once they stop tinting the water, but you’ll lose some of their ecological benefits. Each time you add new botanicals, follow proper preparation and observe your livestock until you learn your aquarium’s rhythm.

Are your products just for bettas?

Nope. Our botanicals are safe for almost all aquariums, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. The only exceptions are goldfish and axolotls, which may ingest small pods like alder cones or casuarina cones. For those species, we recommend large leaves such as Indian Almond, Loquat, or Jackfruit.

What are Tannins?

Tannins are natural compounds released by leaves, seed pods, and bark as they decompose in water. They soften water, gently lower pH, and create the characteristic tea-stained tint found in blackwater habitats. But their role goes far beyond color—tannins fuel beneficial bacteria, fungi, and biofilms, which form the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. They also offer mild antifungal benefits and help reduce stress in fish by replicating the natural conditions they’ve evolved in. At their core, tannins are plant-derived antioxidants that connect your aquarium to the same processes at work in wild flooded forests and streams.

Haven’t added fish yet but love the look of these, the copepods seem to love them and they add natural caves.

Love at First Swim

My Betta loved this from the moment I added it, and it’s now his favorite place to hang out. I love the way it looks in the tank, and that it provided a natural environment for my Betta. The inside is smooth and Betta fin friendly, and provides ample space for him to swim in and out. Prep was easy and the directions were fantastic. I soaked the pod for an additional 24 hours with a weight to hold it under water and get it really water logged. When I added it to the tank, it easily sat on the bottom and didn’t float up at all. Highly recommend!

Love these! Really dramatic look.

I got a couple of types of pods and cones with my most recent order, and this is definitely my favorite esthetically. And the snails seem to really love it too. There are always some on and in it.

Ramshorn snails fave

This pod is my ramshorn snails favorite hang out spot, notoriously known as the “toilet”, a great hang out place for them. It is durable, one pod last quite a long time, before I got more from here, I already got one from somewhere else in my tank, and it is still going strong after 2 months. So I make sure I stock up more to replace it when it’s done.

Awesome

I haven't put them in the tank yet, but they're gonna be a great place for my aquatic creatures to rest and hide it. The tannins will be good too. They're strong and came unbroken.

Love the jungle pods!

The shipping took a while but I love the product and so do my shrimp, who love hiding in them and picking at them for food.

The jungle pods make such great habitat for shrimp and their surface area can grow an abundance of supplemental nutrition for them to graze on. Thank you! -Ben

Great addition to the tanks!

I ordered the 4 pack and they were beyond expectations. They are much larger than anticipated and fit very nicely into my two tanks. They were so large that I put an additional one into my crested gecko tank and he also loves to lounge in it. My sorority loves these for individual hides and my male loves sleeping in them. Definitely recommend, I also boiled them for 1 hour so they would sink in tank.

Beautiful addition to any tank!

I bought 4 of these pods and currently have 2 in my betta/corydora tank. My betta doesn’t notice them, but they have been great hiding spots for my catfish! I catch them laying in the pods all the time, they’ve also added beautiful tannins to the water.

They’re a lot larger than I expected them to be, but my Betta seems to love it. After boiling, I let it sit in a bucket of water to get waterlogged to sink, and that took about 3 days. I’m really liking the color coming out of these pods, and the amount of biofilm colonizing is fantastic!

The Coolest Lil’ Fish Cave

Love the fast an eco friendly shipping of all these products. I bought this b/c it’s good for the water quality and looks so much cooler than the typical plastic caves available. My betta likes to lurk inside and be cool.

Jungle pod hides

Shipped SO FAST! The pods were larger than expected but varied in size and shape. My plan is to use as Betta sorority hides. The pods are gorgeous; nice and smooth, and large enough to fit a Betta and let HER swim out again. I plan to arrange with some stacking. A lovely botanical! Thank you!
