Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides) is a fast-growing aquatic fern native to swampy forests, marshes, and slow-moving rivers across tropical and subtropical Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Its finely divided, lace-like fronds take on a different shape depending on whether they grow submerged or above the waterline, and the plant thrives equally well rooted in the substrate or left to drift as a floating mass. In the Botanical Method Aquarium, this flexibility makes it one of the more adaptable plants for absorbing excess nutrients and building cover for fry and shrimp.

Water Sprite for Planted Aquariums & Blackwater Biotopes
Water Sprite's dense, feathery fronds can quickly absorb excess dissolved nutrients directly from the water column, helping to outcompete algae. That same tangle of foliage, whether rooted in the substrate or left floating at the surface, becomes a grazing ground and refuge that fry and shrimp utilize as refuge and for foraging biofilm growing on the leaf surfaces.
Water Sprite grows quite fast, filling in open water column space within weeks under good light, so we regularly thin and redistribute cuttings rather than letting a single mass shade out neighboring plants or cryptocorynes growing up from the leaf litter on the substrate. Because of its quick growth rate, California's Department of Food and Agriculture rates Ceratopteris thalictroides a noxious weed, and it cannot legally be shipped there; if included in an order to that state, it will be removed before shipment. Please remember to never release aquarium plants, Water Sprite included, into local ponds, ditches, or waterways.
Tint reduces how much light penetrates the water column, but that has little bearing on Water Sprite: floating fronds sit at the surface in full light regardless of how dark the water below has become, and even rooted specimens hold up in a heavily tinted blackwater aquarium about as well as they do in clear water. Light is the lever that actually drives its growth: more of it produces a faster, denser plant, while low light produces a sparser one that thins out. We position it nearer the surface, or increase the light intensity on our plant lights, whenever fronds start to thin.
Water Sprite propagates readily from small plantlets that form directly on its older, mature fronds, complete with their own tiny root systems while still attached to the parent leaf. Slight browning on these fronds is a normal sign of a fertile leaf carrying developing plantlets, not decline, so we leave them attached until the plantlets have grown large enough to separate and replant. A floating stem cutting will also root on its own from the surface, given enough time.

Ceratopteris thalictroides grows across a wider range than almost any other aquarium fern, rooting in flooded rice paddies, marshes, and the slow-moving margins of rivers throughout tropical Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Across parts of tropical Asia, young, uncurled Water Sprite fronds are gathered from rice fields and swamps and cooked or blanched as a leafy green, sometimes grown on a garden scale for that purpose alone. In the Philippines, where it's known as pakong-sungay, it remains one of several native ferns still harvested this way today. Where a botanical contributes as it breaks down, an aquatic plant is living and contributes as it grows. So let them grow. Mother Nature leads the way.

Are these plants duckweed and snail free?
All Plants may contain snails or snail eggs, small macroinvertebrates, and duckweed. We keep them in all of our tanks for the benefits they provide. We have experienced the presence of small snails, ostracods, daphnia, and beneficial detritus worms.
Are your plants only for tinted water conditions?
Nope! All of our plants will grow perfectly in untinted aquariums that have CO2 and aquasoils, or low-tech planted aquariums. Our selection, though, is optimized for emersed plant growth and low- to medium-tinted water environments.
What is your aquatic plant shipping schedule?
To ensure our aquatic plants ship under the best conditions, we are currently shipping our aquatic plants on Mondays. Please have your orders placed by 11:59 pm on Sundays. Aquatic plants usually arrive within 1-4 business days
How are your plants packaged?
All of our aquatic plants are shipped in sealed bags or cups, inside insulated mailers. Void fill is used to ensure plants stay secure during transit to your ecosystem. Heat & Cold Packs are available for purchase.
Are your plants just for bettas?
Nope! Our aquatic plants are safe for almost all aquariums, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. Many of our plants can be grown emersed in filter compartments, vivariums, or incorporated into wabikua.
What are Tannins?
Tannins are natural compounds released by leaves, seed pods, and bark as they decompose in water. They soften water, gently lower pH, and create the characteristic tea-stained tint found in blackwater habitats. But their role goes far beyond color—tannins fuel beneficial bacteria, fungi, and biofilms, which form the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. They also offer mild antifungal benefits and help reduce stress in fish by replicating the natural conditions they’ve evolved in. At their core, tannins are plant-derived antioxidants that connect your aquarium to the same processes at work in wild flooded forests and streams.
