Pearlweed (Micranthemum micranthemoides) is a fast-growing stem plant historically associated with mid-Atlantic tidal wetlands, sold in the aquarium trade for its tiny, round, pearl-like leaves along creeping stems. It can be grown floating, rooted loose in the substrate, or trimmed low as a carpet, branching readily wherever a stem is cut. In the Botanical Method Aquarium, its dense stem growth builds fine-textured cover at multiple depths and draws heavily on nutrients in the water column as it grows.

Pearlweed for Planted Aquariums & North American Biotopes
Pearlweed branches readily from any cut point along its stem, filling in as a dense, fine-textured stem plant wherever it's placed. Left to grow vertically, it stretches toward the surface and can be trimmed back to encourage bushier, lower growth instead; either method works as a high nutrient-export aquatic plant. We usually float new stems for a week or two before rooting them, giving the plant extra light exposure to establish before it goes into the substrate.
Tint has a moderate effect on Pearlweed, more than a floating plant, less than your classic carpeting species that needs to stay compact and close to a light source. Moderate to bright light keeps growth dense and prevents the stems from stretching thin and leggy as they reach for available light; in a heavily tinted aquarium, stronger light compensates for what the tannins filter out before it reaches the plant.
Propagation is straightforward: most cuttings with a node will root once planted, and established plants spread further on their own through runners along the substrate. Regular trimming encourages bushier growth, with freshly cut stems replanted to propagate around the Botanical Method Aquarium.
Beneath the Leaves: Micranthemum micranthemoides in the Wild
Micranthemum micranthemoides, known historically as Nuttall's mudflower, once grew in the intertidal mudflats of the Delaware, Potomac, Hudson, and several other mid-Atlantic rivers, rooting in sandy, gravelly ground exposed by the tide. It was always a narrow specialist, restricted to freshwater estuarine shores because it could not tolerate salinity, flowering from September to October before its seeds set along the shrinking tideline. It was last documented in the wild on September 13, 1941, and is now listed as possibly extinct.
The pearlweed sold across the aquarium trade today, including under this name, is almost certainly not the same plant. Herbarium comparison work by the Academy of Natural Sciences found that plants sold as Micranthemum micranthemoides match a different species entirely, Micranthemum glomeratum, the manatee mudflower, a Florida-native margin plant that carries its own conservation concern. Micranthemum micranthemoides likely never entered aquarium cultivation at all. What reaches our aquariums under this name grows from a lookalike that took its place in the trade decades after the original vanished from its native rivers.
Where a botanical contributes as it breaks down, an aquatic plant is living and contributes as it grows. So let them grow. Mother Nature leads the way.

Are these plants duckweed and snail free?
All Plants may contain snails or snail eggs, small macroinvertebrates, and duckweed. We keep them in all of our tanks for the benefits they provide. We have experienced the presence of small snails, ostracods, daphnia, and beneficial detritus worms.
Are your plants only for tinted water conditions?
Nope! All of our plants will grow perfectly in untinted aquariums that have CO2 and aquasoils, or low-tech planted aquariums. Our selection, though, is optimized for emersed plant growth and low- to medium-tinted water environments.
What is your aquatic plant shipping schedule?
To ensure our aquatic plants ship under the best conditions, we are currently shipping our aquatic plants on Mondays. Please have your orders placed by 11:59 pm on Sundays. Aquatic plants usually arrive within 1-4 business days
How are your plants packaged?
All of our aquatic plants are shipped in sealed bags or cups, inside insulated mailers. Void fill is used to ensure plants stay secure during transit to your ecosystem. Heat & Cold Packs are available for purchase.
Are your plants just for bettas?
Nope! Our aquatic plants are safe for almost all aquariums, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. Many of our plants can be grown emersed in filter compartments, vivariums, or incorporated into wabikua.
What are Tannins?
Tannins are natural compounds released by leaves, seed pods, and bark as they decompose in water. They soften water, gently lower pH, and create the characteristic tea-stained tint found in blackwater habitats. But their role goes far beyond color—tannins fuel beneficial bacteria, fungi, and biofilms, which form the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. They also offer mild antifungal benefits and help reduce stress in fish by replicating the natural conditions they’ve evolved in. At their core, tannins are plant-derived antioxidants that connect your aquarium to the same processes at work in wild flooded forests and streams.
