Each Mahogany Pod Section is a single valve from the woody capsule of Swietenia macrophylla, a tree native to the neotropics and grown across Indonesian plantation forests since its introduction to Java in the 1870s. The capsule splits into five of these valves as it dries, and the rough woody surface of each makes for ideal biofilm sites that small fishes and shrimp can graze. Its curved shape helps recreate the diverse matrix of a flooded forest floor in our botanical method, blackwater, and biotope aquariums.

Mahogany Pod Sections for Aquariums & Vivariums
The valve wall is thick woody tissue with a rough outer grain that beneficial bacteria and fungi preferentially colonize, beginning within a few days of introduction to the Botanical Method Aquarium. The biofilm and periphyton that develop provide a grazing resource for shrimp, microfauna, and small fishes, and because of its high durability, it can cultivate this nutrition longer than more ephemeral botanicals like our leaf litter. Its shape helps suspend it off the substrate, adding vertical habitat to the litter bed and structural variation that benthic fishes may forage through in the wild.
Mahogany Pod Sections carry a low tannin content, and the tint they do release is a light golden brown. Those tannins leach from the cracked cell walls of the valve, which is high in lignins. That lignin content is the reason for its high durability, and it provides a different food source to beneficial bacteria and fungi than a softer botanical does. The tannins and polyphenols that leach out are the precursors for humic substances, which form in the ecosystem as these compounds oxidize and condense with microbial byproducts. Please let the sections break down fully, and add Mahogany Pod Sections as a recurring input rather than a single addition, layering new ones in as the older ones soften.
At 3 to 7 inches long, one section provides the primary habitat structure in a nano Botanical Method Aquarium. In larger aquariums of 20 gallons plus, use several as components of a diverse leaf litter bed.
In the vivarium, these pods provide structural habitat for our critters. Isopods and springtails seek refuge beneath them, feeding on the biofilms they cultivate and breeding in the stable humidity they hold. There is no need to remove the mahogany pod sections once they have softened, since the detritus and mulm they produce feeds the bacterial and fungal network working beneath the leaves.
Beneath the Leaves: Swietenia macrophylla in the Wild
Swietenia macrophylla grows along riverbanks and in deep alluvial soils from southern Mexico through Central America and into the Bolivian and Brazilian Amazon, usually below 600 meters. Its capsules stand upright on the branch and take close to a year to mature, 10 to 15 centimeters of woody fruit holding 30 to 40 winged seeds. When the rains stop and the tree sheds its leaves, the capsule dries and the valves warp apart, releasing the seeds to spin down on the wind, just like the seeds of maple trees found across North America. The valves eventually break free and fall to the forest floor below.
They land on soils and silt that the river deposited, and the next rainfall carries that fallen canopy material into the waterways. When we add Mahogany Pod Sections into the aquarium, we replicate the allochthonous inputs that fuel the food webs of aquatic ecosystems around the globe. Mother Nature leads the way.

What are the Fluffy White Growths on my Botanicals?
That’s biofilm and fungi—what we call the “goo phase.” It’s one of the clearest signs that your aquarium is alive and functioning. These growths wax and wane naturally as botanicals decompose. They’re harmless, even beneficial, and will disappear on their own once microbial populations stabilize.
Will botanicals lower the pH of my water?
That depends entirely on your source water. In very soft or RODI water, botanicals can gradually lower pH as tannins and humic substances accumulate. In medium to hard tap water, buffering capacity often resists these shifts, and you may not notice much change. At Betta Botanicals HQ, our very hard water (350+ ppm) shows almost no pH change unless we use botanicals like Alder Cones or Macaranga Leaves.
When should I replace leaves or pods in my tank?
We recommend allowing botanicals to fully break down into detritus, since this fuels microbial life and enriches the substrate. You can remove them once they stop tinting the water, but you’ll lose some of their ecological benefits. Each time you add new botanicals, follow proper preparation and observe your livestock until you learn your aquarium’s rhythm.
Are your products just for bettas?
Nope. Our botanicals are safe for almost all aquariums, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. The only exceptions are goldfish and axolotls, which may ingest small pods like alder cones or casuarina cones. For those species, we recommend large leaves such as Indian Almond, Loquat, or Jackfruit.
What are Tannins?
Tannins are natural compounds released by leaves, seed pods, and bark as they decompose in water. They soften water, gently lower pH, and create the characteristic tea-stained tint found in blackwater habitats. But their role goes far beyond color—tannins fuel beneficial bacteria, fungi, and biofilms, which form the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. They also offer mild antifungal benefits and help reduce stress in fish by replicating the natural conditions they’ve evolved in. At their core, tannins are plant-derived antioxidants that connect your aquarium to the same processes at work in wild flooded forests and streams.
