Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Pink Flamingo' is a tissue-culture cultivar of Cryptocoryne wendtii, a rosette-forming rooted plant native to the streams and wetlands of Sri Lanka. It grows from a rhizome buried in the substrate, sending up ruffled, lance-shaped leaves that emerge salmon pink and hold that color under stronger light. In the Botanical Method Aquarium, it grows best when rooted into a nutrient-rich substrate beneath a low-tint water column, where it provides ground-level cover and a grazing surface for shrimp, fish, and microfauna.

Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Pink Flamingo' is a heavy root feeder, drawing nutrients through the rhizome rather than from the water column the way stem plants do. In the Botanical Method Aquarium, a layer of aquasoil or root tabs beneath the substrate supplies the nutrients it needs to grow well. Light intensity impacts its leaf coloration the same way it drives Red Tiger Lotus: strong light promotes a deep salmon pink, and as available light drops, the pink fades toward green.
Melting is a normal part of keeping Cryptocorynes: leaves die back and dissolve after shipping, a water change with different chemistry, a temperature swing, or being uprooted and replanted. In the wild, Cryptocoryne wendtii goes through a related dieback each dry season, when falling water levels expose submerged leaves to open air before the plant regrows emersed once the rains return. In the aquarium, that same rhizome response is triggered by disturbance rather than season, and new leaves typically emerge within four to six weeks.

Cryptocoryne wendtii grows submerged and along the margins of slow-moving streams and seasonally flooded wetlands across Sri Lanka, rooting in sediment where water levels and clarity shift with the rains. It is one of the most variable Cryptocoryne species in cultivation, producing a wide range of leaf color, shape, and texture across populations from different parts of the island, which is part of why it has become the source of so many named cultivars in the aquarium trade. 'Pink Flamingo' is one of those cultivars, stabilized through tissue culture in the early 2010s. Its exact parentage within the species is not fully settled, and unlike the wild forms it descends from, it does not occur in nature; it exists because tissue culture propagation preserved and multiplied a color form that would otherwise be difficult to hold true to type from seed.

Are these plants duckweed and snail free?
All Plants may contain snails or snail eggs, small macroinvertebrates, and duckweed. We keep them in all of our tanks for the benefits they provide. We have experienced the presence of small snails, ostracods, daphnia, and beneficial detritus worms.
Are your plants only for tinted water conditions?
Nope! All of our plants will grow perfectly in untinted aquariums that have CO2 and aquasoils, or low-tech planted aquariums. Our selection, though, is optimized for emersed plant growth and low- to medium-tinted water environments.
What is your aquatic plant shipping schedule?
To ensure our aquatic plants ship under the best conditions, we are currently shipping our aquatic plants on Mondays. Please have your orders placed by 11:59 pm on Sundays. Aquatic plants usually arrive within 1-4 business days
How are your plants packaged?
All of our aquatic plants are shipped in sealed bags or cups, inside insulated mailers. Void fill is used to ensure plants stay secure during transit to your ecosystem. Heat & Cold Packs are available for purchase.
Are your plants just for bettas?
Nope! Our aquatic plants are safe for almost all aquariums, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. Many of our plants can be grown emersed in filter compartments, vivariums, or incorporated into wabikua.
What are Tannins?
Tannins are natural compounds released by leaves, seed pods, and bark as they decompose in water. They soften water, gently lower pH, and create the characteristic tea-stained tint found in blackwater habitats. But their role goes far beyond color—tannins fuel beneficial bacteria, fungi, and biofilms, which form the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. They also offer mild antifungal benefits and help reduce stress in fish by replicating the natural conditions they’ve evolved in. At their core, tannins are plant-derived antioxidants that connect your aquarium to the same processes at work in wild flooded forests and streams.
