Green Crypt (Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green') is the standard green-leaved variant of one of Sri Lanka's most widely kept aquarium plants, a rosette-forming species rooted in the streams and seasonally flooded wetlands of the island's western and central regions. It grows from a rhizome buried in the substrate, sending up broad, lance-shaped leaves that spread into a dense clump as the plant establishes itself. In the Botanical Method Aquarium, it grows best when rooted into a nutrient-rich substrate beneath low to medium light, where it provides habitat and refuge within the leaf litter bed.

Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green' for Planted Aquariums & Blackwater Biotopes
Green Cryptocoryne is a heavy root feeder, the same as every Cryptocoryne we carry. A layer of aquasoil or root tabs beneath the substrate helps it establish and spread, and once it does, new plantlets form on runners that extend out from the mother plant, filling in around driftwood, roots, and the leaf litter bed. As a mid-ground plant, it bridges taller background plants and the leaf litter bed below.
Among the color forms cultivated from this species, Crypt Green has the widest band of growth conditions, needing only low to medium light to grow well and staying productive across that range without pushing toward the high end. Tint is a tradeoff: as the water darkens, less usable light reaches the leaf surface for photosynthesis, so a darkly tinted aquarium does better paired with light on the higher intensity side of this plant's range, or with placement where ambient light isn't already competing with taller plants and hardscape.
Runners extend from the mother rhizome and root as new plantlets, which can be separated and replanted once established. Most stock is grown emersed at the nursery, above the waterline, so expect the original leaves to melt away within the first few weeks after introduction. New leaves adapted to submerged growth typically follow within a few weeks.
Beneath the Leaves: Cryptocoryne wendtii in the Wild
Cryptocoryne wendtii is endemic to the streams, rivers, and seasonally flooded wetlands of western and central Sri Lanka, rooting in sediment where water levels rise and fall with the monsoon. Populations spend part of the year growing emersed along exposed banks and part submerged once the rains return. This range of conditions is also why C. wendtii is one of the most variable Cryptocoryne species in cultivation, with wild populations differing enough in leaf color, shape, and texture that the aquarium trade has drawn several named forms directly from it, Green among them, alongside Red, Brown, and cultivated variants like 'Tropica'.
Where a botanical contributes as it breaks down, an aquatic plant is living and contributes as it grows. So let them grow. Mother Nature leads the way.

Are these plants duckweed and snail free?
All Plants may contain snails or snail eggs, small macroinvertebrates, and duckweed. We keep them in all of our tanks for the benefits they provide. We have experienced the presence of small snails, ostracods, daphnia, and beneficial detritus worms.
Are your plants only for tinted water conditions?
Nope! All of our plants will grow perfectly in untinted aquariums that have CO2 and aquasoils, or low-tech planted aquariums. Our selection, though, is optimized for emersed plant growth and low- to medium-tinted water environments.
What is your aquatic plant shipping schedule?
To ensure our aquatic plants ship under the best conditions, we are currently shipping our aquatic plants on Mondays. Please have your orders placed by 11:59 pm on Sundays. Aquatic plants usually arrive within 1-4 business days
How are your plants packaged?
All of our aquatic plants are shipped in sealed bags or cups, inside insulated mailers. Void fill is used to ensure plants stay secure during transit to your ecosystem. Heat & Cold Packs are available for purchase.
Are your plants just for bettas?
Nope! Our aquatic plants are safe for almost all aquariums, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. Many of our plants can be grown emersed in filter compartments, vivariums, or incorporated into wabikua.
What are Tannins?
Tannins are natural compounds released by leaves, seed pods, and bark as they decompose in water. They soften water, gently lower pH, and create the characteristic tea-stained tint found in blackwater habitats. But their role goes far beyond color—tannins fuel beneficial bacteria, fungi, and biofilms, which form the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. They also offer mild antifungal benefits and help reduce stress in fish by replicating the natural conditions they’ve evolved in. At their core, tannins are plant-derived antioxidants that connect your aquarium to the same processes at work in wild flooded forests and streams.
