It spreads by runners across the substrate and sends up long, ribbon-shaped leaves that grow up toward the surface. In the Botanical Method Aquarium, its roots release oxygen into the substrate beneath the leaf litter, and its leaves provide cover and a grazing surface for shrimp and fry. Our favorite way to use them is as a background plant, or to let them grow at random to help emulate a section of lake or river as we would find in the wild.

Essential Details

Care Level: Easy

Growth Habit: Rooted, spreads via runners

Light: Low to Medium

CO2: Not Necessary

Propagation: Runners

Tint Tolerance: Low to Medium

Habitat Location: Southern Europe, North Africa, and Southwest Asia

Optimal For: Betta fish, shrimp, rasboras, and small tetras

Use with Caution: Rinse before introducing; may carry beneficial hitchhiking snails, snail eggs, or duckweed from the grow-out ponds

Size Range: 6 to 18 inches tall

Quantities: Sold as 2-count bare root plants

Italian Vallisneria for Planted Aquariums & Blackwater Biotopes

Italian Vallisneria absorbs most of its micro- and macronutrients through its roots. As the plant photosynthesizes, it transports oxygen down to its roots and releases part of it into the substrate. This lets it grow well in detritus-rich substrates, where the oxygen can support beneficial bacteria and fungi, some of which help in the nitrogen cycle. We plant it below the leaf litter and let the runners creep between the botanicals.

The higher the amount of tint you have in your aquarium, the less light reaches your plants, and light dictates how quickly Vallisneria grows. Its long leaves grow up toward the surface, which helps them reach light in a heavily tinted aquarium. To keep micro- and macronutrients available at the roots, we like to use root tabs in an inert sand substrate. Aquasoils absorb tannins from the water column, so an inert substrate keeps the tint and chemistry your botanicals release.

Runners extend from the base of the mother plant and root new plantlets as they creep. To keep open swimming space for bettas, rasboras, and small tetras, we thin the plantlets by lifting excess with their roots, and we remove leaves that lie across the surface at their base. Excess plants go to the compost, and we never release aquarium plants into local waterways.

Beneath the Leaves: Vallisneria spiralis in the Wild

Vallisneria spiralis grows in the fresh water of lowland lakes, slow rivers, canals, and ditches, where its runners build dense underwater meadows. Each plant is either male or female. Male flowers break free from the base of the plant and float to the surface, where they drift into female flowers held at the surface on long stalks. After pollination, the female stalk coils into a tight spiral and draws the developing fruit back below the surface, the trait that gives the species its name.

Where a botanical contributes as it breaks down, an aquatic plant is living and contributes as it grows.
